Make Your Own QR Codes

There are several ways to make your own QR codes using online generators. Some of the sites require you to register and may even have a cost attached. We all know that school budgets can be tight and finding a free tool is often the best idea when creating multiple codes. Some of the generators are very simple and quick, others take a long time to generate and then up load.

Here is a list of my top 3 user-friendly FREE QR code generators:

Quikqr is my favourtie tool for generating QR codes because it's free and easy. It does not require you to sign in or register. Students could easily create their own codes with this simple tool. All you have to do is copy/paste a URL link or text and click "Generate Code". In less than a minute, you have a code that can be re-sized, emailed and saved as a .png file.

Here is a sample code that I created using Quikqr that will link you to my blog Teaching and Learning 2.0 Style

My second favourite QR code generating tool is Kaywa. It works similarly to my first choice, however it doesn't look as user-friendly. It serves the same purpose, it's free and it's quick. No registration is required. It offers a few more options in terms of what you will link your QR code to (URL, text, phone number, SMS) which might be overwhelming for younger students. Simply paste in a URL, etc., select the size you want and click "Generate". Within 30 seconds your code is ready to save or embed.
Here is a code that I generated with Kaywa. It will link you to my school division's homepage, Regina Public Schools.

I selected the next generating tool as my third choice, only because it creates more creative QR codes that students would enjoy, but perhaps get carried away creating. You can create codes by selecting different coloured backgrounds and foregrounds and even include some characters of texy. It works the same as the others, however it does require a few more steps because of the customization. To make your code, add text, a URL and click "Next". Then edit the borders, rotation, and colours. Click "next" again and your code is created. Right click and save image.
This a more creative code that I created with Winergy's Qr code generator. Scanning this code will link you to my Twitter page.
